Book Cover Evaluation

What was the theme for the project?

The theme for the project was based on a poem written by Roald Dahl, the poem was called, "Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf". Which is an adaptation of "Little Red Riding Hood", with a twist at the end.

How have you developed your ideas? How did your work change through the project?

At the beginning of the project we brainstormed quick ideas into our sketchbooks, from there I developed my ideas by doing rough sketches every time i had an idea. I eventually thought of my final draft, however as I worked through the book cover i adapted and changed and only ended up keeping a few of my original ideas, as i thought of some better during the homework.

How much reference material did you find? Do you think you should have done more or less?
I don't think i found as much reference material as I should have, as i was strugling for ideas at points during the project. I think i should have gotten more.

What artists or designers have you looked at to help and inspire you?
I haven't really looked at a lot of designers or artists, I often just typed something into google and used the best image i could find, for example "Little Red Riding Hood", i then searched the pages and eventually found an image I liked, which I drew out myself and put onto my book cover. I did practice some Scott Campbell work but decided against putting it in my Final Cover.

What materials, tools and techniques did these artists use?
 
With the Red Riding Hood I found, it was from a movie, so it was probably designed online, with the Scott Campbell work, i used Black Gouache which is kind of like paint.

How have your skills developed during the project?
I now have a better understanding of photoshop, and Macs in general, as I haven't really had much chance to use it. My skills have also developed in drawing, as we where told an easier way of drawing wolves.

Are there any aspects of your studies that you wish you had explored further?

I think I should have further developed my black goauche as i don't feel i did enough and i also didn't include it on my book cover. I also feel that my chalk and charcoal should have been included. 

How have you used formal elements such as line, tone, colour and shape? 

In the project we where only allowed to choose one colour other than the black and white(and greys) so as it was based on little red riding hood i chose red.

What materials did you use, and why? Did they work successfully? 

The main materials i used where graphite, charcoal and a biro pen. I used the graphite to draw with, then i went over those drawings with the biro. I used charcoal to add tone and detail in some parts but eventually coloured over it in photoshop as i did not feel it worked that well. I did however think the graphite and biro worked well.

What meaning and messages did you want to convey and were you successful? 

I aimed to give little red a look of fear yet determination. I am not sure this worked well. To improve this i could give more detail on facial features and posture.

Are you happy with your final piece? Are there any elements you like in particular?Is there anything you would change? Why?

 Overall i am not very happy with my final piece as i dont think i used my time well enough. I didnt use all the techniques and materials we had been learning about and chose easy methods. If i had the opportunity to do this again, i would certainly use different techniques.
